Calcium
Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body and 99% of it is found in the bones and teeth. Over the years, bone density begins to decrease as part of the natural aging process. Calcium is a nutrient needed to maintain bone density and can be found in foods like milk, cheese, nuts and seeds, tofu, kale, and legumes.
Magnesium
Another essential mineral found in our body is magnesium. It’s required for over 800 enzymatic reactions in the body, including helping to regulate calcium in cells. In addition to that, magnesium stimulates the production of calcitonin, a hormone that inhibits the cells responsible for bone breakdown. Not only that, magnesium activates alkaline phosphatase, which is vital for forming new calcium crystals in bone. You’ll find magnesium in foods like legumes, tofu, and nuts.
K2 & D3
Vitamin D3 is vital for assisting the absorption of calcium and phosphorous to keep bones and teeth strong. K2 is essential for bone metabolism and is an activator of osteocalcin, the protein essential for calcium deposition in bone. Together, vitamin D3 and K2 help influence mineral strength in bones and teeth – D3 absorbs calcium from the intestinal tract and K2 guides this calcium into the bone.
Zinc
Trace minerals like zinc are needed in small amounts in the body, but they make a big difference. Zinc in particular is needed for the formation of bone-building cells, and for preventing bone breakdown. Zinc can be found in foods like shellfish, legumes, nuts and seeds, whole grains, and eggs.
Phosphorus
Phosphorus is an important nutrient for bone-building but is required in fine balance with calcium in order to properly support bone health. When calcium levels are too high, the body is unable to properly absorb phosphorus, and the reverse is true too. Food sources of phosphorus include red meat, seafood, dairy, legumes, and nuts.
Boron
We know now that calcium is a vital nutrient for bone health, is responsible for bone strength, and relies on the presence of vitamin D for absorption. Studies have shown that boron, a trace mineral found in leafy greens, nuts, and grains, positively impacts the use of vitamin D in the body which can help enhance its role in mineral metabolism. Boron also influences certain steroid hormone production, which helps prevent calcium loss and bone demineralization.
Vitamin C
One of the most important structural components of bone is collagen, a protein that in addition to strengthening bones also bolsters, skin, muscles, and connective tissue. Vitamin C is one of the necessary nutrients essential for the production of collagen in the bone matrix, making it an important nutrient for bone health. Vitamin C is commonly found in citrus fruits, bell peppers, cruciferous vegetables, tomatoes, and strawberries.
