Garcinia cambogia (Malabar tamarind) is a small pumpkin-shaped fruit traditionally used in Asian recipes for its sour flavour. Lately, some of the fruits have become quite popular for weight loss.
How does Garcinia Cambogia work?
The active component of Garcinia Cambogia is (-)-Hydroxycitric acid (HCA). In some lab studies, it has been shown to inhibit the conversion of carbohydrates to store as fat. This may have some potential weight loss qualities. Another study has found that HCA may even raise serotonin levels which may lower cravings and give a greater sense of calm.
How to take Garcinia Cambogia
Although optimal amounts of HCA remain unknown, some supplement manufacturers suggest taking two 500 mg capsules of HCA up to three times per day (before each meal). The effect of HCA is enhanced when used in conjunction with exercise and proper dietary lifestyle. Therefore, HCA may be less useful if it only offsets the negative effects of an otherwise unhealthy diet.
